2002: Bringing Baby Home
Last updated
My friend Rob Logan arrived at Cirrus on Friday the 24th to join me for the trip home to Cuyohoga County Airport (CGF, 19nm ENE of Cleveland's "big" airport). Naturally he snapped a photo of "the line" with my N464M in front.

Due to Murphy, we stayed overnight in Duluth and departed Saturday morning. Rob snapped some photographs as we took off from DLH...

We had considered several routes of flight home. Because of really nasty weather our IFR flight plan route was... KDLH V177 HYR V345 EAU V129 ODI V129 QUEST V129 DBQ V158 PLL V158 SHOOF D KARR. This would keep us behind the line of storms running from Texas thru Chicago to Canada!

In the air, with the weather worse than forecast, we amended our plan and landed at Dubuqe (DBQ) via a fully-coupled ILS 36 with a 400' overcast and about 6 mi visibility.

We were very well treated at the very modern and clean FBO. They loaned us a car and we went for "fast food."

In turn we bought avgas, filling the tanks.

On return to the FBO we used their weather computer and agonized over the continuing bad weather between us and home... At least the bad weather had moved eastward while we were off getting food.

Good sense prevailed and we planned a simple leg that would just "poke" at the back side of the wall of storms. Our filed route was KDBQ V158 PLL V158 SHOOF D JOT V8 CGT V8 GSH KGSH.

The plan worked. We arrived at Goshen after the wall of storms had departed to the east.

I got to do another fully-coupled approach, an ILS 27 with 800 and 2.

On checking the weather radar at the FBO, we saw that the wall of storms was not clearing and was way too intense to penetrate.

So we made arrangements to spend the night in Goshen.

Once again the FBO was modern and clean and the folks there were super. They parked my brand new plane in their maintenance hangar to protect it from the weather (and to keep the two hangar-cats company), loaned us a car, and gave us recommendations for accommodations and food.

The next morning, Sunday, we got my plane out of the hangar, said goodby to the hangar-cats, and prepared to go home on a beautiful day.n464m_05_26-1.jpg

We again filed an IFR flight plan using... KGSH V92 VWV D SAROW D KCGF.

Our routing was changed a bit in the air giving us a more direct route (but with less over-water than shown in the map below).

All in all, a very good week and a very fine airplane!
