1st Annual Cirrus Migration, June 2003: Continued Last updated
After landing, rollout and taxi to the Cirrus ramp, we were guided to the next available parking spot. Turned out that is was quite a distance from the Cirrus Customer Center. No problem, Cirrus had their staff parking planes and hefting luggage and providing lifts to the center.

After getting chauffeured from my plane to Cirrus HQ and registering for the Migration, a shuttle van took us and a few others downtown to the Lake Superior Railroad Museum for the reception (dinner!). We got to meet many owners who were already friends from the COPA internet Forums. | ![]() Image courtesy Lake Superior Railroad Museum |
The Migration's agenda started with seminars on Saturday morning. There were sometimes three independent seminars going on at once. Anyway, I first attended a two hour session on engine management given by the folks from GAMI, George Braly and Walter Atkinson, wearing their Advanced Pilot Seminars hats. Jack attended this two-hour session as well. I took a break for the next hour and visited the vendor displays. Jack went off on a factory tour. | ![]() Image by Jack P. |
Come noon I grabbed a box lunch and attended Doug Ritter's Ditching and Water Survival seminar. Doug is a knowegeable and excellent speaker and runs the Equipped to Survive web site and the Equipped To Survive Foundation. | ![]() Image courtesy Equipped to Survive |
Then another break with vendors and back to another seminar. This time one given by L3 Communications, the company that now owns the Goodrich Stormscope and Skywatch systems. These devices show me real-time lightening and traffic (other airplane) information. Next I went to the "Care and Feeding of Your Propeller" seminar - but no speaker showed up! Back to the vendors...
For the last seminar of the day, I attended Doug Ritter's "21st Century Survival Signaling." The image shows Doug (photo actually taken on Sunday AM) holding a PLB, a Personal Locator Beacon. These gizmos can use built-in GPS receivers in addition to a 406 MHz locating signal to inform searchers who you are and where you are to within about 300 feet! I'll be buying one soon. | ![]() Image by Jack P. |
